Hi Atom,
I'm not sure what Gary's concept of "antenna" is, but I do know a little about the Reticular Activating System (RAS). First, the RAS acts as a sensory filter in that it is involved in what information we attend to or not. It helps filter (or gate) other information that enters are brain - information that is less relevant to us.
Second, the RAS also sends fibers to several parts of our brain. It has an excitatory or stimulating effect on these other regions. A drop off in RAS activity will actually decrease the function of the Frontal lobe. For us to maintain consciousness, the RAS needs to be active - it is critical for basic arousal.
Hope this helps.
