EFT was originally developed to reduce the therapy process from months/years down to minutes/hours. As emotional problems faded, both physical health and personal performance improved (often dramatically). As a result, EFT is spreading quickly among the healing community. It is an emotional version of acupressure wherein certain meridian release points are gently stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips.

Surregate reaction to tapping on others

Whilst tapping on my clients I seem to have a surregate reaction to their energy release. Often it is me that releases all the energy and I do all the sighing etc. and sometiomes I feel a bit drained after a session. It seems they don't seem to have much reaction yet they still progress and have cognitive shifts. I have wondered if it is me releasing my own energy in relation to the issues being adddressed but in most cases I don't have any connection to their problems other than the fact I am working with them.

Does anyone else have this type of reaction? It dosn't worry me but I do find it curious

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

     Don,

I have had many cases where my physical  reaction (sign, yawn, tenstion release) is equal if not greater than my clients.  As time has passed and as I have work with more people, I am also much more likely to tune into th symptoms in their body.  (On more than one occastion I have freaked a client out by telling them what was going on in their body.)

I the cases that my reaction is great, it has tended to be with clients who were less expressive than me.  Meaning in general sitiuation I was more expressive than them, so that in this spicific situation I am more expresive.

I not you said you aren't worried, but since is it obvious you are tuning in to the energy of your client, you might want to be careful.  There are people from time to time who I work with who are in a very dark place.  As much as I want to help them, it would not be good from me to go to the same dark place.  In these cases it is easy enough to image a shield of white light protecting you.

While at the NGH conference this year I heard a great idea for a protection visualization that involves a sheild of white light and a lightning rod.  I recorded a quick and dirty version for a friend.  If you are intersed it can found at here .

    Hello

Thank you Gene for pointing this out, about the protection and the dark places that people can be in. This is a very real thing and it should not be taken lightly. ALWAYS protect yourself from someone else's energy and ALWAYS protect yourself from other's being able to tap into yours. The shield of White Light is very powerful and easy to do so I would also suggest that you get into the habit of putting up your protective bubble each and every day and also prior to working with a client.

Also I would like to say that to intuitively be able to address an issue or condition within another's body is a positive thing however IDENTIFYING with another is not. You should never leave yourself open to identifying with anothers issues or dis-eases of the body because then you risk taking them on yourself and this is not what one wants to do. When energy is released it needs to find it's way out of the room and out into the great Universe rather than finding it's way from one person's being to that of another by way of leaving yourself open and receptive to taking on that energy. Make sense?

    Blessed be, Kathleen

    Hello Don

Not sure what your thoughts or beliefs are on past lives but it is my belief that our souls are recycled many many times therefore carry with them the events and, unfortunately negative 'stuff' from each and every life that we have encountered. So, this is an awesome time to perhaps release some 'stuff' that may be part of your make up from another life time that for whatever reason you haven't uncovered as of yet or are still unaware of ... Borrowing Benefits ... a great way to create some self healing while working with others.

Plus, I find that tapping itself calms me and of course any time I [we] can receive some peace and calm, a bit of relaxation ... this is a very good thing!

    Take care. Peace, Kathleen

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

Thanks for that guys, I will take on board your advice. I usually centre before a session (especially the first one of the day) and I will try putting the white light around myself as protection and I will let you know how I get on.

As to past lives, there was a time when I would have thought all this is a load of rubbish but as I've progressed and with the amazing things that have happened to me since I discovered quantum physics and EFT (about 18 months ago) I am open to a far lot more than I would have ever imagined. I now just let life take me to where ever I'm going and its amazing what you discover along the journey. Take care, Don

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

Hi Guys, A bit of an update since the last time I posted on this subject. Since then I have done a massage course and problems with reaction to tapping and combined massage have increased to the point I am becoming concerned for my health. After a session I have woken in the middle of the night with headaches and a dreadful feeling. I beleieve that unless I can resolve this issue I should not do any more healing as it is affecting my wellbeing.

I tried the white light and to be honest I keep forgetting to do it before a session, is there a more permanent way of protecting myself from other peoples stuff? This is now serious and I am becoming a bit aggitated by the negative stuff coming in to my existance from others. The massage perticually has increased the amount of stuff I'm absorbing.

    Any suggestion appreciated. Don

    Hi Don,

Just a "lay" user here, not a practitioner, but I would be very sorry to hear that someone with your blessing was not able to continue on your path of helping others to heal.  You seem to be what Dr. Judith Orloff (Energy Psychiatrist) describes as an "intuitive empath" in her book, Positive Energy.  Without belaboring the subject, she gives some good advice in her book in addition to the centering and white light that you are already doing.  It might be a worthwile read for you.

Meanwhile, it seems that you already have many set-up statements in your post:

ET problems with reaction to tapping and combined massage have increased to the point I am becoming concerned for my health, I DACLAAM, and I am allowed to be concerned for myself.

ET I have woken in the middle of the night with headaches and a dreadful feeling,  I DACLAAM, and I am safe.

ET I beleieve that unless I can resolve this issue I should not do any more healing as it is affecting my wellbeing, I DACLAAM, and I trust myself to know what is best for my own well being.

ET I tried the white light and to be honest I keep forgetting to do it before a session, I DACLAAM, and I am in the process of making this protection a healthy habit for myself.

ET I want to find a more permanent way of protecting myself from other peoples stuff, I DACLAAM, and I will able to make self-protection a part of my everyday way of being.

ET this is now serious and I am becoming a bit aggitated by the negative stuff coming in to my existance from others, I DACLAAM, and I can learn how to help others without risking harm to myself.

ET the massage perticually has increased the amount of stuff I'm absorbing, I DACLAAM, and I can take steps to protect myself.

I don't have a clue as to whether the endings of the statements suit your needs, but that's what came to me as I was writing, so I offer them.  Take what fits, leave the rest.

    Don:
I tried the white light and to be honest I keep forgetting to do it before a session, is there a more permanent way of protecting myself from other peoples stuff?

What is your "physical hygiene" procedure between appointments?  I am sure that you would not endanger either your clients' or your own health/wellbeing by forgetting it.  Your "energy hygiene" is no less important to you or your clients.  Why not incorporate your energy hygiene into your procedure for physical hygiene?  For example, when washing your hands, the soap could be the means of removing the negative energy of the previous client, and the rinse water could be the means for reinforcing your positive, protective energy.  If you use a hand sanitizer, then it could be the means of trapping the negative energy until you do wash your hands.  The massage oil could also be the means of reinforcing your positive, protective energy between you and the current client.  Although you may consciously have to think about these things for a while, I believe it will quickly become "second nature" and your subconscious mind (and your "bodymind") will quickly begin to automatically recognize the deeper significance of these seemingly mundane actions.

Since your hands play such a major role in your healing practice, you could also use them as the focal point of your EFT during your workday.  You could choose to include some short-form, 2-point tapping on your hands as you wash/sanitize/oil them.  Use the KC point while saying/thinking "releasing negative energy" and the 9-gamut point (w/o the eyeing, humming, counting) while saying/thinking "reinforcing positive energy".  Or, you could just massage both points at one time as Mair Llewellyn describes in her "Two-Point Method" in this article:  http://www.emofree.com/Articles2/9-gamut-uses.htm  Just make sure that you do it on both hands so that your protection is not only bilateral but also "bi-brainial" (my word for both sides of the brain).

For what it's worth, I suspect that there are many frustrated healers such as yourself who don't feel that they can begin/continue to help others because of the potential personal peril. Again, I would be sad to know that a blessing such as yours had been wasted.  I hope you will find ways to protect yourself so that you can continue to share your gift.

For any first-time reader of this forum, please note that "ET" = "even though" and "DACLAAM" = "deeply and completely love and accept myself" as used in the traditional EFT set-up phrases; "KC" = "karate chop".

Sticks and stones may break the bones, but WORDS CAN BREAK A HEART.

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

Hi, thanks for your suggestions, you make very good points and I will do the EFT with my own words as you have laid down. I am much more at ease now and when I wrote that you can tell from my comments the aggitation I was going through, it took me a couple of days to get over the last episode and I think I have been a bit blarza with my preperation.

I rang a spritual healer who is a friend of mine and she suggested I go for a long walk in the bush (forest) to ground myself and while there she sent me distance Rieki, it was good to be alone with nature and helped me a lot, we did a bit of healing the next day and she further relieved the tension etc. I have come to respect what I do a great deal more and from know on make sure I protect myself and as you say do the energy hygiene before and after a session.

Things have moved very fast for me since I started EFT and the massage has added a new demension to my practice. It is a constant learning experience and this came out of left field and knocked me about a bit but I will learn from it and I will be better for it. If you knew my background I would be the last person you would think of to be doing this, EFT has changed my life dramatically and is far from reaching its pinical. I believe the answer to becoming accomplished at anything is to allow it to happen, what I didn't expect was to allow this other stuff in at the same time. Once again thankyou for your input. Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

    Hi Don

I did also a lot of bio-energetic work. My experience is that it is very important to be grounded. Shielding with al kind of light can be fine, but my experience is that when you're not grounded energetic protection is less effective.

How to ground easely? When you're working with a client be sure you physically feel your feet or bottom. The better you feel the grounding, the less woory about energetic involvement of client.

A second remark. When you work with a client there is a risk that you become symbiotic with the client. The benefit is that you feel a lot, the risk is that you become one with the client. I don't believe that that's very effective, so you need a little distance. One of my teachers had a nice dutch expression for it (liefdevolle onverschilligheid), I don't know if there is a nice translation for sure but the meaning of it is, that you are in a lovingfull way not interested in the client. Means something like whatever the client choice is, I respect that choice, but I'm willing to assist in love, without feeling responsible for the client. This attitude also stimulates grounding and saves a lot of energy.

    with kind regards

    Henk

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

Oh goodness...  Welcome to the World of Weird, as I call it!

Where do I start?  LOL!  I have always been a strong empath, and I release the client's energy and feel their feelings even when it is surrogate EFT from several countries away.  I say their words (even if an animal, which is freaky LOL!), feel where it is in their body they feel it, and sometimes get an image or a person relating to a root cause. My clients know I'm that weird tapper and they just go with the flow.  They find it hilarious how I keep yawning so much, I get tears in my eyes.  They simply just take it as a measure of how much release they are getting for their money, and it reassures them that they don't have to be the one who cries :-D

I personally know at least two EFT practitioners on this forum who experience strong empathic phenomena with their clients too.  And they are fine with it.

On a more serious note, I am very fortunate indeed to have had thorough training in Reiki before learning EFT, and when I first learned EFT, I proceeded to do my Personal Peace Procedure as if there was no tomorrow.  In Reiki, we are taught to channel energy.  It goes through us, never sticks to us, and we are taught to allow it to come to us, through to the client, and allow any unwanted energy to come off us and the client.  Like a constantly open tap of streaming energy.  Nothing bad sticks.  Everything good always is constantly coming in, in abundance.

I have noticed in my workshops that serious practitioners of Reiki that have evolved with it are like un-furred pipes.  You know how in areas of hard water, the inside of a pipe gets clogged up, calcified, or kind of furry?  Well, those Reiki healers are kind of un-furred.  Energy goes through them very cleanly, because they have already cleared much of their negative energy and learnt how to let go and channel.

In a typical introductory EFT workshop where I have 2 Reiki (or spiritual) healers and 2 non-healers, the non-healers' SUDS go a bit like 8-7-5-4-2-1-0.  The Reiki healers' SUDS go more like 8-5-2-0. Fascinating!

What is happening with you imho is that something in your clients' negative energy is resonating with the negative energy still in you.  In other words, you are not just feeling the clients' energy.  This energy is actually magnifying what is already in you. This is one reason why every practitioner has to do their Personal Peace Procedure.

What I would strongly advise is that you stop working on clients with EFT for now and work in earnest on your own Personal Peace Procedure, at least for an hour a day for at least a month. Also learn to channel energy in and out of your system, so that you have an automatic technique that you use to let go.  Psychic protection is also advised, however never let yourself be ruled by fear.  If you are acting out of fear, then that means that there is an awful lot of fear in you still, and you simply need to do more tapping for yourself.  Love is stronger than any fear :-)

Being sensitive to psychic information usually also is connected with being sensitive overall in some ways.  So you probably are emotionally naturally sensitive too.  When you are back to working with clients, do your best to only tap on yourself, whilst the client mirrors your tapping.  This ensures that you are tapping for your emotional reaction to any negative emotions the client presents you with.  If you really absolutely need to tap on them (EG if they are having an abreaction or if it is during a massage), then ask the Universe to allow you to use their body to release any negative feelings that you may get about their negative feelings.  In other words, surrogate their body for yours.  A kind of reverse surrogate tapping.

    Happy Tapping, my empath friend!

Re: Surregate reaction to tapping on others

I've done bucket loads of personal peace and am constantly maintaining any stuff that comes in, we can never clear everything as it ebbs and flows and adds to our life experience. You can read from the copy of my original post a couple of days ago that I was loaded with the negative stuff from the session with my client. Even to me it dosn't sound like me, it was a short but nasty experience. I haven't had any trouble or got any nasty reaction when using EFT except a bit of yawning etc. (this is where all this strated a month ago) the crappy stuff came after I did massage. As to channeling energy in and out I am very reactive to that and can usually clear my own stuff very quickly but this time I couldn't do it on my own. I think the grounding is the way to stop it ever happening again, that and creating a shield around myself. Trust me, I will be making I will never allow that stuff in again! I will take on board your advise, thank you for your responce.

PS. I am starting Reiki 1 in a couple of weeks

    Hi Suzanne,

I haven't been following the thread closely but your post caught my eye.  I really wanted to second your post.  I came to EFT after doing a lifetime of personal exploration and growth -- most recently including Reiki and a one year intuition/energy training.  Without that pre-work there is no way I could be working with clients the way I am.   Now, my ability to feel energy and operate intuitively are my greatest gifts -- before doing my work, they were my greatest curse ....  (I still get in trouble once in a while if my mind engages too much <grin> ... I have to stay in that empathic zone ... )

I imagine many folks drawn to healing and EFT have these energetic abilities.  If we aren't developing and supporting ourselves, then we will just get caught by our clients' issues.  I consider it my professional obligation to get support and do my own work so that I am in a good space to work with clients.  That said, the leverage is awesome -- a little bit of support for myself translates into 20 clients getting great results ....

Fascinating observation about the SUDS with healers and non-healers  .... I love the non-furred pipe image .....

    Hugs,

    Deborah

    Hi Don,

You will love the Reiki.  Your training will show you how to ground yourself even more effectively.  Some Reiki disciplines and teachers teach psychic protection, so that may well be a good part of the teaching too.  You will be amazed how Reiki fits into EFT :-)

BTW, I hope it was OK to suggest the PPP and time out.  I think we all need time out every now and then, and I totally agree about the fresh stuff that needs to be PPP'ed all the time - story of my life!

    Please keep us updated!

I've massaged several clients, some of whom I know have big issues and this time had no negative reaction from the sessions (thank god). Thankyou everyone for your input and I do appreciate the advice you all gave.
