Hi,
I have been working with a person with a long history of chronic back pain. We were able to decrease the intensity of his pain in one area of his back early in our session. As we worked on a different aspect of his pain, he identified a scene from his childhood that was associated with the specific pain that he was focused on at the time. He gave the episode the title of "At the top of the stairs."
I gave him instructions for making a movie of the episode and running the movie until he began to note even the slightest anxiety and then to pause the moviie and to let me know when he was pausing. We then tapped on the paused picture. After tapping, I asked him to rewind the movie to the beginning and to watch the movie again with the same instructions relating to pausing the movie when he noted even slight anxiousness. He did that and was able to progress farther in the movie on his second attempt than he was able to progress the first time. We did two or three more repetitions of watching the movie, stopping, tapping and going back to the beginning of the movie.. He was able to progress farther in his movie each time. But after his fourth viewing, he told me that each time that he returned to the beginning of the movie his level of pain at the beginning of the movie was higher than it had been the previous time.
I was puzzled. After checking with my intuition, I brought our session to an end for the day. We have agreed to meet again this Thursday. I am going to try to find Gary's book at my local Barnes and Noble. Does any one have any suggestions. I would appreciate assistance.
Grace and Peace,
Glen Booth
