EFT was originally developed to reduce the therapy process from months/years down to minutes/hours. As emotional problems faded, both physical health and personal performance improved (often dramatically). As a result, EFT is spreading quickly among the healing community. It is an emotional version of acupressure wherein certain meridian release points are gently stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips.

    sleep issues and self sabotage

Hello, I am new posting to this forum. I have been practicing EFT for several months in my practice as a mental health therapist with very good results. I notice that it works less well on one of my own issues than with others. I have studied the first 2 sets of DVD's and worked with over 50 people so far.

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have had very good results tapping on the pain which is pretty much nonexistent now. I have also been diagnosed with a sleeping disorder that consists of lack of adequate REM stage sleep and a circadian rythym disorder. I have tapped on this issue trying many different approaches. I have tapped on the lack of REM and immediately started dreaming more. Still I cannot seem to control my sleep patterns. I tried tapping on circadian rythym disorder, fatigue in the day, trouble getting to sleep, trouble waking up, emotional issues that I think may be contributing, tried tapping with the DVD for borrowed benefits, and many other approaches to try to get some relief. As it is I cannot seem to control my sleep/awake cycles. I would appreciate the advice of you experts out there on how to approach this situation.

My first feeling when reading your post is that you need an EFT therapist, I think you've buried some really not too great things and may need some help re-attaching to your emotions in particular shame and embarrasement.

The second thing is that I would think it's an intense fear of something bad happening if you go to sleep, I and my son had this problem.

I would re-visit the emotional issue you remember using the telling the story technique. But first I really think you have to work on being comfortable with and accepting your own real feelings about whatever it is you've gone through in particular shame and embarrasement.

I hope this helps if not just disregard

Hi Cynthia and welcome to the forum

How wonderul to hear about your results from tapping on the pain of fibromyalgia, which I hope will be an inspiration to others reading this forum.

What occurred to me when reading your post about the disturbed sleep/awak cycles, is that you are maybe using tapping to control this rather than finding acceptance of it. Sometimes our cycles and patterns become disturbed as a way of letting us know something about ourselves. Having been someone myself who struggles to get enough sleep, and always seems to be able to take more, but rarely sleeps uninterrupted, it wasn't until I recently read a book about menopause and sleep disturbance that I began to see that it can sometimes be a gain rather than a loss to be disturbed. Almost as though the body is calling for attention to our own interior rhythms and cycles rather than those dictated by working hours.

So I wonder if you could tap for coming to a better understanding of your body's need for these cycles and allowing yourself to explore the differences of the awake states at different times of day and night.

5 element study might also reveal to you which organ and therefore which emotional aspect of yourself is 'processing' at the times you are awake or asleep. I don't know enough to be able to say but others do, or maybe you can find the information. The basis of the theory is that our organs have a 'high energy' and a 'low energy' time during which they are processing, and if you are finding yourself always awake at the same time of night, this may hold the clue. So if was kidney time, you can know that kidneys are processing fear but are also our toxin filters. This may give you a clue as to the emotional aspects to work on with your tapping.

Re: sleep issues and self sabotage

Hi Cynthia - Bodhileaf has some good ideas. the hours of 9-11 pm is when what is called the Triple Warmer meridian is active. When we have experiences, they just don't go willy nilly anywhere in the body. fear goes to the kidneys, rejection goes to the spleen, frustration to the liver, etc. Triple warmer controls the 3 'burning' areas of the body, assimilation, elimination and respiration, it rules metabolism, and thyroid. The emotions connected with it are hope vs. hopeless, humiliation and ridicule vs respect and honor, depression.

the time period of 11pm-1am is the purview of the Gall Bladder. While the Liver, which comes next,is from 1-3 am and is all about anger and frustration, the gall bladder concerns rage and the acting out of anger. It's about feeling abandoned and betrayed. It's look for adoration and trust...and 'adoration' in the Chinese term is about being 'adored by God".

Then the Liver meridian is charged between 1-3am, and its about suppression/oppression/repression, frustration, having someone in your life who seems to be your 'best friend" and support system, but maybe giving you too much in order for you to feel beholding and not leave.

I had a client who had been waking up with a start for many years a couple of times a night. This was before I started doing EFT, and I was working with hypnotherapy with him. Come to find out, when he was a child he wet his bed, and his parents had some sort of electric shock system, whereby when the bed got wet it gave him a charge. How could no one have put two and two together before? Anyway, he was from Australia, and I never saw him again, but I hope it was an eyeopener and set him on the path to resolution.

I'm dealing with sleep issues too, and I'm wondering if it wasn't safe to go to sleep as a child. We repeat things in cycles. What was happening 29-30 years ago? and 58-60 years ago if you're in that age range? Some of those memories could be coming up to look at again. hope that gives you some ideas, Best, Pam

    Hi Cynthia,

I'm so glad to hear that you've had success with treating your fibromyalgia.

EFT founder Gary Craig talks alot about how important it is to allow EFT to "work through you".  I agree with the feedback that you've already been given - trying to control your sleep patterns is not likely to work.  I think many of us who have been practicing awhile have gotten a lesson that trying to use EFT to control things doesn't work well.

Instead of this approach, I'd suggest tapping on things like:

    • Even though I really want to sleep well but I'm not, ...
    • Even though I'd really like to be able to control my sleep patterns and it's very frustrating that I can't, ...
    • Even though I want EFT to work for my sleep patterns like it did for my fibromyalgia but it's not, ...
    • Even though I'm wondering how self sabotage fits into my sleep problem but I'm not really sure, ...

Also, as was mentioned in the previous post, it might be worthwhile to explore the theme of safety.  Hypervigilance due to high stress or traumatic events in the past often pops up in my detective work with clients who are struggling with sleep disturbance.

    Hope this helps Cynthia.

Re: sleep issues and self sabotage

I wanted to thank each of you for your assistance. I read each post carefully. It is clear to me that I am just a beginner.

Pamela, your advice contains a lot of ideas I have never heard of. I never heard of these particular meridians you write of and their relationship to organs in the body. I have only the first 2 sets of DVD’s. Either these are advanced  techniques or they are not EFT. I will do some research on these to help me understand.

I have already tapped on many of the issues you folks suggested in your posts which I thought could be underlying the sleep problem. I wanted to go elsewhere so Kimberly and Marian, I thank you for your words on acceptance. That hit a chord, particularly when I considered Paul’s post and his suggested affirmations. I have tapped on merely accepting and my found some relief, at least my preoccupation with sleep/no sleep has diminished which is really nice.

A lot if ideas were mentioned in your posts that are beyond my beginner knowledge. Five element study, energy in bodily organs, triple warmer, emotions going toward specific organs are things I have not yet come across in my study of energy psychology.

I can see I have a lot of work ahead of me. And I know the path will be enjoyable and enlightening. I thank each of you for your willingness to participate in the forum and assist newbies like me.

     Cynthia,

" I have tapped on merely accepting and my found some relief, at least my preoccupation with sleep/no sleep has diminished which is really nice."

YES!!!!  I'm so happy to hear about your progress.  And, I have to agree - this path is very enjoyable (downright full of joy sometimes) and enlightening.  Keep doing your detective work for your less "preoccupied" place and I trust you'll continue to make progress.

    Glad you are here,
