EFT was originally developed to reduce the therapy process from months/years down to minutes/hours. As emotional problems faded, both physical health and personal performance improved (often dramatically). As a result, EFT is spreading quickly among the healing community. It is an emotional version of acupressure wherein certain meridian release points are gently stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips.

The trophies that really matter

An influential man in your life died recently.  His name was Coach Ben Hammerschmidt (Coach Ben).  He was my high school baseball & football coach and, whether you are aware of it or not, he was YOUR coach as well ... and still is. Why? Because his principles have made EFT what it is.  They permeate every corner of it.

Let me explain.

In my teenage years, Coach Ben was the centerpiece of my life. At first, I didn't get his true teachings because I thought pursuing trophies was what life was all about.  Excel in sports. Win some blue ribbons. Gather hardware and statues for your mantlepiece so you can display your greatness in the years to come.  Do so and people will admire you. They will will go "oooh" and "ahhh" at your trophies and will love you.

Sigh!

Coach Ben helped me get those trophies and even helped me get a Stanford football scholarship.  For that I am forever grateful.  He was a disciplined man, as a coach must be.  But he was also a man with an open hand and a soft side that understood the true meaning of his job. He understood giving and fair play and integrity.  For him, life wasn't about trophies or money or any of that stuff.  It was about helping young men along life's many paths.  It was about the power of teamwork and how pulling together brought rewards that individual prima donnas could not achieve on their own.

He lived these principles without really talking much about them.  His life was an example for us all and touched multitudes by his presence. He was love personified in a sturdily built German body.

It took me many years and a lot of maturing to finally get Coach Ben's true message. EFT is built on that message because the "trophies" of EFT have nothing to do with certificates on the wall, awards, money, fame and the like. Our trophies are all about...

  • healing and spiritual connection
  • emotional freedom and walking out of our own prisons
  • turning anger into forgiveness and replacing pain with peace
  • love and making sure everyone has access to the EFT process in a quality and consistent way
  • the comraderie within our growing EFT Community and the teamwork that Coach Ben taught so beautifully.

These are the trophies that really matter.

Saturday, May 23, 2009 is the date of Coach Ben's memorial service in my home town of Riverside, California.  I am honored to have been invited by his family to address hundreds of his athletes and friends by reciting a poem that I wrote for his retirement dinner 30 years ago.  I put it on the internet and, if you wish, you can view my Coach Ben Tribute now.

Sooner or later, we all come to the end our lives.  When people attend your memorial service which of your life's "trophies" will they remember?  Will they even care about the hardware on your mantlepiece or the certificates on your wall?  Or will they remember the times you made a difference in the lives of others?  Your softness, your smiles, your encouragement.

What better time than now to touch our brothers and sisters and collect a few more of those trophies that really matter.

Love, Gary

Gary, I'm sorry for the loss of your coach and mentor. It is true that he willl live on in all the people whose lives you have touched and it will continue out like the ripples on a pond. I am sure that he continued to think of you as the "great Gary Craig." Not everyone recognizes the gifts they are given by others and how to make the most of them. You did. And that is a trophy I'm sure he cherished.

Dear Gary,

We live our lives mired in the mundane confusions of egoic mind. This is, as you say, how the world works. However, when one life is infused by the loving insights and living example of another, such as Coach Ben, something amazing happens.  All the love and insights that Coach Ben inspired in you have been transfered, through your example,  to your students.  We in turn touch the lives of others through our example. To live one's life as a conduit of love is to live life most generously. The trophy of EFT is to live our lives generously. To offer ourselves as conduits of love, forgiveness, and healing.

I believe all healing is self healing and this healing begins when one person reaches out and touches another with love and the insights and understandings that beget forgiveness for self and others. We all touch others with our lives for good or ill.  However, when  a life  lived in the confusion of egoic mind has been touched  through EFT by the generosity of love; the power to heal and the courage to step out of the prisons of our own making is manifest.

Coach Ben has touched many many lives through you Gary. The dust returns to dust but the spirit remains in its power and glory. You have honored Coach Ben with your life as your students aspire to honor you through theirs. We are at the beginning of a healing experience that is going to express itself exponentially and thus forever change the world as we have known it. The beauty of EFT is that it is a self healing modality and as  each practitioner transmits this knowledge they empower their clients  to heal themselves. The root of the word generous relates to noble birth. That is the birth of the family of man living in a state of personal peace and true expression. I believe Coach Ben inspired you to live such a life and you in turn have inspired others. A team can not be about just one person. It is about each person  expressing that which they do best  and doing this for themselves, but, and most importantly, not only for themselves. I believe EFT is such a team.

Sincerely, Yona

I'm sorry for your loss, Gary.  I liked your poem when I heard it the first time on your DVD's. Love is such a mystery, yes? Here is a poem for you by Henry Van *** that I share about passings:

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come together to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, "There she is gone!"

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me. Not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!" There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout "Here she comes!"

And that is dying.

Peace & Blessings

Gary that is a touching story, it reminds me of my father, also a great friend who looked as though he would eat you alive yet had a heart the size of a mountain, a ski coach who was as hard and demanding and a neighbour who was a simple mountain farmer but a giant amongst his community. Like coach Ben each lead by example. I remember the short moments spent in their company and yet I have an eternity of guidance in those memories.

In your story you thought you had finally got the message from coach Ben. Just wait and see what comes every time you need that guiding hand. The paradox is the real learning is just beginning

You may not be able to touch Coach Ben again but you can see, hear, talk to him and  learn more than ever before.

Knowing they are no longer may leave an empty space somewhere but just let them step back into that space and you will find they start a whole new life as your personal life coach and a friend forever.

Happy Days!  Sooooo Glad to have discovered YOUR site again!  I first found your web site in the summer of 2006 -- what a blessing.  From the beginning I knew both you, Gary, and your web site were something genuinely extraordinary.  After downloading and studying the manual I ordered all of the DVD sets and began working with EFT in earnest both with myself and clients.  Each Newsletter arrival was the first email to be opened.  And I found them always to be both inspirational and motivators for delving more deeply into EFT.  It became my first choice in working with clients for many, many kinds of issues.

Hoping to learn more from the "masters" -- I took both the Level I and Level II-Advanced course workshops.  Both were a waste of time, money, and effort.  I was hugely disappointed at the superficial level and poor quality of training offered (as well as the incredulous conduct of one of the 2 instructors who apparently in an effort to liven up the class chose to get up on one of the tables and dance to the rather nerve jarring music she decided to play on her boombox!)  I came away from the second workshop disenfranchised and far less enthusiastic about the modality.  However, after tapping on it I realized that it was "her/their" workshop -- not yours.

Then came the news that the "Group" was taking over the training/certification program and that things were going to be very different.  I never knew how it happened but all of a sudden I no longer received your newsletters, and it was as if a light had gone out.  Although deeply saddened by no longer hearing from a friend I had never met -- I went to the other group's web site and signed up for the newsletter -- thinking it would provide the interesting and helpful information your original web site had always been chockful of.  Not so -- and after an issue or two, I unsubscribed.  I stumbled on Pat Carrington's EFT web site, and subscribed to her "new" EFT Newsletter. As a psychologist myself, I greatly respected her experience and thought her web site would provide similar helpful information.  However, that, too, was a major disappointment.  Always there was the HUGE spread of her name across the top of each "newsletter," broken links, duplicate emails, continuing apologies for various and sundry errors on the web site, and basically nothing but a blurb to sign up for the next tele-course or buy her books or CDs or whatever.  Not seeing your name anywhere on the "Summit" thing I didn't register for it, and later unsubscribed from the mail list as they never seemed to contain anything of real value.

What a joy it was to re-discover your web site again today and sign up for YOUR Newsletters -- and to learn that you are still "at the helm" of this wonderful healing tool.  I applaud your decisions with regard to EFT, the vastly improved requirements for training/certification, and the re-emergence in my life of someone who puts EFT rather than personality or ego before the tool!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you -- you are a shining light in a world so much in need of it.  Now that I know the training will come from the source, I am looking forward to taking the Level I Exam in the near future.

Peace, Blessings, and Great Joy to You!
