EFT was originally developed to reduce the therapy process from months/years down to minutes/hours. As emotional problems faded, both physical health and personal performance improved (often dramatically). As a result, EFT is spreading quickly among the healing community. It is an emotional version of acupressure wherein certain meridian release points are gently stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips.

A Gift of Gentleness

One of EFT's main goals is to help people achieve personal peace.  As we reduce the angers, fears and traumas of the past, our physical ailments fade and we spend more time in a loving space. This brings about wondrous shifts that can transform everything around us.  Below is a delightful parable that provides glowing evidence of these possibilities.

A Gift of Gentleness

Once upon a time, a church had fallen upon hard times. Only five members were left: the pastor and four others, all over 60 years old.

In the mountains near the church there lived a retired Bishop. It occurred to the pastor to ask the Bishop if he could offer any advice that might save the church. The pastor and the Bishop spoke at length, but when asked for advice, the Bishop simply responded by saying, "I have no advice to give. The only thing I can tell you is that the Messiah is one of you."

The pastor, returning to the church, told the church members what the Bishop had said. In the months that followed, the old church members pondered the words of the Bishop. "The Messiah is one of us?" they each asked themselves.

As they thought about this possibility, they all began to treat each other with extraordinary respect and gentleness on the off chance that one among them might be the Messiah. And on the off, off chance that each member himself might be the Messiah, they also began to treat themselves with extraordinary care.

As time went by, people visiting the church noticed the aura of respect and gentle kindness that surrounded the five old members of the small church. Hardly knowing why, more people began to come back to the church. They began to bring their friends, and their friends brought more friends. Within a few years, the small church had once again become a thriving church, thanks to the Bishop's gift.

Yes, Gary, I have often thought that if we humans would worship each other, instead of some unknown spirit, think of all the goodness we would heap on each other, and think of the magnificent and uplifting art and music done to the glory of us. And just think if we worshipped our children (and they us), we would feel it our duty to not try to change their essence, but guide them in how to bring it out beautifully for all to see and further worship. If we worshipped our teachers (and they us) how different compulsory education would be, how great and important our children would feel and how pleasant to go to school among all that worship and respect. There would be no prejudice, everyone would be worshipped for being human and respected for whatever talents or gifts they share, or for their kindness and goodness. There would be no wars, no violence, no hunger nor pestilence. Everyone would share what they had with each other, similar to tithing in our religious bodies now. Simplistic, I know, but if there were just a tiny modicum of worshipping each other or at least acknowledging how exciting and wonderful we each are by all others, what a wonderful, joyful world it would be.

It's always the same.  The symptoms are on the outside, the cause on the inside.  In other words the only way for things to change outwardly is for us to change inwardly.  Everyone who understands this is working on it, on themselves.  We need to set examples through our own behaviour and teach this to the children. It would also help to show more examples of this in the media, especially TV, instead of all these hostile soaps and the like.  Thoughtfulness and respect go a long way.

It has been my experience that kindness and gentleness are like a warm fire to my spirit.  I soak it up, turn around and around so that all of me is warmed, my muscles relax, I stretch like a cat, I almost purr.  I am so charmed that I become charming and others are drawn to my charm.  The kindness and gentleness pours out of me and they are warmed.  It is not hard to love, it is hard not to love when you have been and are being loved.  Oh, how much we need the fire!

Gary, this is my first visit to your blog.  Thank you for making us welcome to share our thoughts.  I'm touched by what I've read here, including some of the sweet but misguided sentiments, as well as the angy attacks, expressed by the hurting people who are desperately looking for help. I love the potential that EFT holds for helping hurting people, I love your desire and effort to help them, and I love the way God is using you through the Internet to get His healing love to those who need it.  I was dismayed this morning, however, to see a quote in your newsletter from the New Age book, A Course in Miracles.  New Age is an amorphous, ecclectic cafeteria of spiritual ideas that includes deceptive substitutes for pure truth, and I pray that none will be diverted to that counterfeit as a result of its publicity here. I was in New Age for over twenty years before I found the true answers to my deepest questions and needs, and now I understand that some New Age teachings are like "a little dog poop in the brownies;" you may not be able to see or smell them, and they may be disguised by the sweetness that surrounds them, but they are potentially deadly.  EFT is a technology that God has given, and we do well to give credit where it is really due, rather than to His rivals.  May He bless you richly as you serve Him who alone is worthy of worship.

Hooray for The Course in Miracles quote.  It is a book that transformed my life from one of pain to one of joy and loving acceptance of what is the vast majority of the time.

Let's let go of our labels, distinctions, definitions - our propensity to play God and decide what is good and what is bad.  It's all God!  Hooray!

Pick your truth but don't judge other's choices.  There are many paths home.

A great and warm story Gary; sad however that they they needed a further motive to worship/ love/ cherish/ respect eachother.
Have been applying liberal helpings of all that, (even more than usual) and am a beginner at helping others to use EFT, but am having positive results and feedback.
Thankfully also lots of warmth and caring from friends and co-workers lately while I have some very trying circumstances. Additionally my young adult son and daughter who are caring individuals, often helping others, (both informally and in leadership roles) and showing warmth, respect and so on have needed lots of my " listening ear " & TLC lately and I am looking to teach them about this great gift (EFT) during this holiday season.
I agree with Marion that there is a lot in the media and particularly many sitcoms and soaps nowadays that are full of negative rubbish. I have found more and more as teacher and trainer that it is definitely "crap in crap" out and people seem to be thinking less for themselves about may aspects of their lives, especially real values. A phrase for the mediocre that I recall from my own Senior High School days when studying media, literature and art was, that much is merely "chewing gum for the eyes".
Thanks so much for your great site Gary, it's  full of warmth and wisdom and your wit and food for thought everyone.
Can't have too much of the positive and thought provoking in this hostile selfish world.
wee x & big Os & thanks

I'm not judging or criticizing anyone in New Age; it was a necessary part of my own journey, and I too found many helpful things along the way; but I would be insensitive and derelict if I were to neglect contributing the fruits of my search to those who may be helped by them. Each of us must find the truth on our own, and I respect anyone who rejects what I have to offer in their own search. Again; having been in New Age for over twenty years, I too used to believe the teaching that "there are many paths home" and "all is God."  There are many more paths that don't lead home, and counterfeits look real because they are designed to deceive.

Good morning!... growing up I drew one subconscious conclusion about myself that infected every adult thought I ever had- namely that i was of no value.... every decision -every word i spoke - could be traced back to that belief ... and needless to say i was miserable....

it has been a long journey out of that dark hole of misperception... if i could make a list of all the teachers who have helped me it would stretch to the stars... each and every one took away a lie and replaced it with 'me'..... i never thought i would ever believe this thought: "god dwells within me as me", but i do...

my heartfelt thanks to all teachers, like Gary, who are moved to help others, like me, find our own truths.....

Gary,

Thank you very much for the lessons.  I choose to accept what I need from them.

The Course in Miracles has filled me with the knowledge of forgiveness and the richness of knowing, "I am not my body.  I am free.  I am as God created me."

Lovely teaching. Thank you for the much needed message of the power of gentleness in this war-torn world. I spent 3 years studying The Course in Miracles &, although it is not the only spiritual material I have worked with, it helped me so much during a difficult time, especially with the dynamic power of forgiveness. I have been practicing EFT for about 6 weeks & have seen such a change in me that goes to my very core that there are no words to express my gratitude to you for being you & role-modeling for all of us the wonder of being AUTHENIC to your deepest call - & then sharing that with the world as a healing service. Thank you, Joanne Bryan

Gary, thank you for being such a willing soul for God's work.  I found EFT a year ago and have been using it on myself and am beginning to share EFT with others (how can I keep still about it?).  I purchased a copy of A Course in Miracles about 3 yrs ago, began to read it.  However, it was too much, too deep for me.  I was drawn back to it from several sources and having seen you quote it in your materials I began reading it anew about a month ago.  It's an amazing and enlightening journey.  It reminds me of the saying (excuse me if I mis-quote it): when the student is ready, the teacher will come.  It's helping me through some tough areas I'm working on.
Bless you and your work!

Gary,

I love that you see fit to connect this story to EFT, even though EFT is not mentioned directly. It is a beautiful story and a brilliant idea. To me it shows that we do tend to take each other for granted, assume the worst--or the least--about each other. As I work with EFT I find there is more and more room to see the sacredness of each person in my life, of each moment. Thank you!

wow, that article touched a deep part in me.  The whole energy of the church changed due to the new found respect and adoration they all felt towards each other (or at least displayed towards each other). And this also had an overflow effect which affected the people outside the church.  The whole church became more respectful and loving and 'attractive'.

How true and how duplicatable. thanks for posting this.

One of the problems of modern society is the false idea underlying 'the pursuit of happiness'. This notion presupposes that one is not happy now & cannot be happy until the pursuit has ended but how can we know that the pursuit has ended. Happiness is not something to be hunted down but is to be found within ourselves. Just look at the happiness expressed by a baby's smile & gurgles. It has not reached this state after following some pursuit - it is the inherent state of all humans. Unfortunately we heap blankets of unhappiness on ourselves & others because of our greed & grasping & ignorance.
Rather than pursuing happiness we should  be seeking to reduce unhappiness for ourselves & others. We need to find time to be quiet & still our thoughts & in action to avoid doing that which creates unhappiness & to do that which will reduce unhappiness. I recommend the book 'The miracle of mindfulness' by Thich Nhat Hanh a Vietnamese Buddhist monk.

Dear Gary and others, Thankyou for your column and the comments that it sparks.
The ideal of respect, value and love of others is so important to me. To realise that we are of the same essence and each of us contain a spark of God (soul), to love and respect that spark in everyone, although not always easy, is a wonderful thing.
And gratitude, thankfulness for what we have now. What a gift!!
Thankyou

This came just when I was involved in less than holy conversation in a church. The return to this Bible advice (to have holy conversation," St. Paul) is, along with seeing Christ in each, what we can do to make a situation better.

While EFT seems to be the common and uniting experience here, I see also so much positive energy coming in from an array of diverse viewpoints. Viewpoints that I often do not share, but feel disinclined to take up in such a forum. And it jars somewhat when someone adds their displeasure at the beliefs of another and or seeks to warn them away from a certain belief. This could become a Christian /Buddhist/Islamic/Hindu/etc forum and just how would this end up. Or we could take what appears to be Gary’s example and highlight the good, spread the positive.
Love to all.
