Emotional Freedom Techniques
Emotional Freedom - Physical Freedom - Performance Freedom
It often works where nothing else will
in Search
EFT was originally developed to reduce the therapy process from months/years down to minutes/hours. As emotional problems faded, both physical health and personal performance improved (often dramatically). As a result, EFT is spreading quickly among the healing community. It is an emotional version of acupressure wherein certain meridian release points are gently stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips.

  • To Grace through Gratitude

I woke up this morning in a state of Gratitude. An exquisite experience.

In this state the world works in wondrous ways. Joy and Optimism abound and problems fade in favor of opportunities.  My day, instead of being a long list of “things to do,” evolved into a joyous stream of "Progress Possibilities."  The list was the same as always, of course, but my attitude shifted it from work to play.

The main purpose of EFT is to pave the way towards Love’s Presence (i.e. Grace).  Our physical and emotional wounds tend to distract us from this spiritual birthright and, as EFT helps send them away, we find ourselves more in alignment with Source.

It is well known that our body chemistry makes major changes as our thoughts shift between positive and negative states.  These natural chemicals have major impact on our health, happiness and longevity.  This is so important that modern Quantum Physicists would argue that the quality of our thoughts has EVERYTHING to do with the quality of our lives.  Positive thoughts take us in positive directions.  Negative thoughts keep us where we are or move us further down the hole.

But can we just turn a switch and consistently generate Grace through practicing Gratitude?  For a few people … perhaps.  But most of us have competing thoughts that get in the way.  That’s because we have been endlessly conditioned by the media and society about how this world is such a struggle. Can we really expect to inject an occasional thought of Gratitude and have it neutralize all that competition?

Well ... that’s a nice idea … but I question its practicality.  It’s like trying to cover a polluted lake with a hand towel.

But there is a way to do it.

We can always start with one thought of Gratitude.  That should be easy.  Just think of something for which you are thankful.  If nothing else, try your toothbrush.  It does its essential job every time you use it and was brought to you through the efforts of factory workers and retail stores.  Where would you be without it?  Then go on to your shoes … and the book you just read  … and on to the people in your life.  The more we do this the larger becomes the hand towel.

Despite our good intentions, our competing thoughts (from the polluted lake) will eventually intrude into this Gratitude process.  They may say something like “This Gratitude thing is silly” or they may present with us a series of “Yes-buts” designed to invalidate our efforts.  These are the barriers to Gratitude.  Fortunately, they can be handled nicely with EFT.

So write them down ... one by one ... and use EFT to reduce their impact.  Over time the lake will shrink and our hand towel of Gratitude will expand to cover it.  Then Gratitude becomes our constant companion and the resulting Grace will bring us health, happiness and longevity.

    A fair trade, I think.

    Gratitude, Gary

  • Maybe-ology: A new name for The Healing Sciences?

My training as a Stanford Engineer taught me to distrust the Healing Sciences.  In fact, they shouldn't be called sciences at all.  Maybe-ology is a much better name.  Here are the reasons...

First, engineering is a "hard science" that relies on physical Laws such as the Laws of Physics, Ohm's Law, the Law of Gravity and so on.  From these highly predictable Laws we reliably make bridges, computers and automobiles.  That's good.  Kudos to Hard Science!

But the Healing Sciences are "soft sciences" where little, if anything, is reliable.  Drugs and surgeries, for example, don't always work and, when they do, the relief varies from person to person (sometimes with disastrous consequences).  Would you drive over a bridge that was constructed using this iffy science?

In addition, most psychotherapies (except EFT) often take forever to get very little done and other healing methods tend to provide only temporary relief.  The end result of all this can be a long term, expensive pursuit with unpredictable results.

To me, that's not science.  Rather, it's a study in probablilties and should be properly re-labeled as Maybe-ology.  That way we won't associate the healing sciences with the hard sciences and thus expect more from them than is possible.

This is not a complaint, by the way.  It's just a statement of what is.  Hard science and soft science are not really the same and the labels should be changed so they are not confused.  That's all.

EFT belongs in the soft science category, even though it is finally bringing a degree of reliability to the field.  It still doesn't match up to the reliability of the Law of Gravity but it DOES create results where only "maybe's" existed before.

    Cheers, Gary

  • Medicine's Major Miss -- The Elephant in the Healing Zoo

Could it be that Medicine has just flat out missed a major cause of disease?

Is it possible that this heavily financed Elephant in the Healing Zoo has been chasing chemical monkeys while a principle cause of disease (emotions) has been purring in its lap for decades?

As an outsider to the medical field I feel a bit strange writing this.  How does a mere Stanford engineer get off questioning the very foundation of one of the world's largest institutions?

On the other hand, I merely point out the obvious.  So let me say it...

Unhealthy emotions such as anger, fear and trauma are a major drain on our body's immune system and thus show up physically as disease.

How simple ... and it is intuitively obvious.  Just about everyone knows this at some level within themselves.  Don't you know, for example, that retaining anger over a long period of time "eats away at your system" and causes blood pressure problems, stomach problems, heart problems and the like?  There is plenty of scientific evidence along these lines but, apparently, it has been ignored.

I will be coming out next month (August) with about 30 hours on DVD wherein I apply EFT for 20+ people with Serious Diseases.  I take aim solely at their emotional issues and, as those fears, angers, etc. vanish, you will see their physical symptoms dramatically fade.  Pain recedes, flexibility returns, tremors subside and so on.  It's astonishing to watch, especially since no medical procedures are used whatsoever.  Note: Anyone can learn the basics of EFT for free by downloading the EFT Manual at http://www.emofree.com/downloadeftmanual.asp

These results would be impossible unless unhealthy emotions were an important cause of physical symptoms.

I'm very open to opposing views but, frankly, I doubt if a whole room full of doctors using conventional medicine (drugs, surgeries, radiation) can duplicate those results.  This is not a criticism of the dedicated docs, by the way.  Rather, it is a commentary on Medicine's Major Miss.  If Medicine isn't addressing the true cause, then isn't it just masking symptoms?

Am I just being naive here?  Do I really think that this simple idea is worthy of the Medical Monolith shifting its focus towards emotional causes?

    Well ... yes!

A growing number of physicians are persuaded in this direction and one such doctor is Larry Burk MD, a radiologist in North Carolina.  Dr. Burk appeared on one our DVDs and discussed these concepts with me at some length.  Interestingly, he has seen many X-rays and MRIs wherein medical explanations are quite divergent from people's experiences of pain.  I print below his comments on my recent post, "What REALLY causes disease?"

    Cheers, Gary

    From Larry Burk MD

I’m responding to Gary’s 7/2/06 blog about What REALLY causes disease? The example of rheumatoid arthritis can be expanded to include all autoimmune diseases where medical science has documented antibodies turned against oneself as the cause of symptoms. However, the cause of the antibody response itself is never explained, so we are left pondering the deeper meaning of these diseases of self-hatred which have negative emotions turned inward as a central metaphor. The best evidence we have for the truth of this metaphor is when results such as those described by Caroline Higgins are obtained with EFT.

It is also instructive to note that many other ailments which seem to have an underlying anatomical cause may also have a deeper emotional root as well. As a radiologist I am acutely aware of this situation, since there are many scientific studies of MRI indicating that a surprising number of people with no symptoms whatsoever have rather dramatic abnormalities on scans obtained on a volunteer basis for research purposes. Equally puzzling, there are many patients with severe debilitating pain from conditions such as fibromyalgia who have no abnormalities on any MRI scans.

In 2001, David G. Borenstein, MD, published an article in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery entitled The Value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Lumbar Spine to Predict Low-Back Pain in Asymptomatic Subjects: A Seven-Year Follow-up Study. In 1989, a group of 67 asymptomatic individuals with no history of back pain underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine. 21 subjects (31%) had an identifiable abnormality of a disc or of the spinal canal. The findings on magnetic resonance scans were not predictive of the development or duration of low-back pain.

Similar studies have been reported in asymptomatic volunteers for MRI findings in the cervical and thoracic spine, the shoulder and the knee. This research calls into question the assumed cause-and-effect relationship between symptoms and anatomical abnormalities. The same issues are raised by the fact that some patients get better when their physical pathology is corrected through surgery, and some do not. In additional research studies on the placebo effect, sham surgery has produced relief of symptoms when nothing but a skin incision was made at the time of the procedure. All of this information lends support to the concept that deeper emotional issues are at the root which can be addressed with EFT.

  • What REALLY causes disease? ... FOLLOW-UP

The response to my recent message on this subject ranged everywhere from Bravo ... to people suggesting I leave the planet.

The latter folks were quick to tell me that I was all wet by suggesting that the cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) was unknown.  Several people told me it was caused by inflammation of the joints and/or problems with the synovial fluid.  Further, they were quick to point out that I should have known that.

While I honor those views, I don't see how we can possibly point the finger of cause at inflammation and synovial fluid problems because they are, obviously, the symptoms of the disease.  How can the symptoms be considered the cause?  That is like saying the cause of the common cold is a stuffy nose.

Several people also pointed to Mycoplasma as a cause.  However, when I looked up that term on the respected medical websites, I could find no indication of WHAT CAUSES THAT.  So should we conclude then, that the cause of RA is some other condition for which the cause is also unknown.  Isn't this like chasing one's medical tail?

If we are to get down to the true cause of RA (and other diseases), shouldn't we be looking at WHAT CAUSES THOSE PRESUMED CAUSES?  I mean shouldn't we be looking for what causes Mycoplasma, inflammation and synovial fluid problems in the first place?

Interestingly, this vital question about cause permeates a long list of diseases.  As it turns out, RA is only a tiny part of the whole dilemma.

We have a mountain of physical healings displayed on The EFT Website, all of which were achieved without drugs, surgery, radiation and the like.  We approached them as though the cause was emotional in nature and ... Voila! ... success.

This should surprise no one because it is intuitively obvious that unhealthy emotions often show up as disease. Are we not, then, running right into an important cause of disease?  Perhaps THE most important cause?

    Cheers, Gary

  • Even b'zillionaires can miss the obvious!

To help fund further medical research, Warren Buffet recently donated $31 Billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation .  The idea, of course, is to pump resources into better worldwide health.  Wonderful.  This gets my standing ovation.

I only wish I could have an audience with Bill and Melinda.

Why?  Because Medical Science is only part of the answer.  It has fallen short of perfection because, in its quest to find chemical answers, it has ignored many causes of disease.  I speak here of such obvious items as poor nutrition, questionable lifestyles and unhealthy emotions.

Common sense tells us that these latter items are major causes of the diseases that Medical Science pursues so diligently.  Who doesn't recognize this obvious fact?  Yet Medical Science basically ignores it.

Sometimes even b'zillionaires can miss the obvious.

This is not a criticism of Medical Science or the generous wealthy donors.  To the contrary, I honor them both.  There's not much they can do to change the habits of the world's citizens and, until recently, there were no tools available to efficiently handle the VERY IMPORTANT emotional causes.

However, with EFT, that has now changed.  We can now collapse even severe emotional issues in relatively short order.  And, as people's anger, fear and trauma fade, so do their physical symptoms.  What seasoned EFT'er has not seen this repeatedly?

Pardon my bias, but I think spreading EFT is the most worthwhile donation anyone can make.  Thus I'm hoping someone knows Bill and Melinda Gates and can forward these alternatives to them.

Here's my estimate of what could be done if only 5% of Warren Buffet's contribution was put behind EFT.

    1.  Schools:  Every teacher, parent and student could be taught the benefits of EFT and thus bring about dramatically better test scores, improved health and superior relationships for our youth.  They are the foundation of our future and their preparation is critical to the health of this planet and its various economic systems.

    2.  Medicine: Every physician and nurse could be thoroughly trained in EFT resulting in their using it BEFORE resorting to invasive procedures such as drugs, radiation and surgery.  Our clear experience with this suggests an annual medical cost savings of 50% to 80%.  It would take a tremendous load off of the American Medicare system.

    3.  Mental Health: EFT Centers could be established so that every traumatized war veteran, rape victim and childhood abuse survivor could finally get the help they so desperately need.  Their debilitating flashbacks and nightmares could become history within a few sessions.  What greater gift could you give someone?

    4.  Prisons: EFT professionals could offer services to our forgotten (and expensive) citizens behind bars.  I have spent many days delivering EFT in the prison system and discovered that most inmates have been badly abused and traumatized in the past.  They are loaded with unresolved anger, guilt, fear and insecurities.  This is what has driven their criminal behavior and all of it can be collapsed with EFT.  Under their tough facades reside their abused childhoods crying out for some personal peace.  EFT can give many of them back their lives, restore them to good citizenship and take a huge load off of state budgets.  The last I heard it costs $20,000 to $30,000 per year to warehouse each inmate.

So, Bill and Melinda, if you are reading this and find it appealing, please let me know.  I can easily demonstrate these claims.  You and over 100,000 EFT'ers worldwide can Touch the World in unique ways.

    With my respects, Gary

  • What REALLY causes disease?

    I'm puzzled.

I was looking on prominent medical websites for the causes of various diseases and was mystified at what I found.

Take Rheumatoid Arthritis, for example.  Below is what WebMD.com gave as the cause of this crippling disease.  After reading it I didn't know whether to giggle or gag.  That's because they took two paragraphs of wobble words to say they don't know.

"The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, but it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic, environmental and hormonal factors. With rheumatoid arthritis, something seems to trigger the immune system to attack the joints and sometimes other organs. Some theories suggest that a virus or bacteria may alter the immune system, causing it to attack the joints.

Research hasn't been able to determine exactly what role genetics plays in rheumatoid arthritis. However, some people do seem to have a genetic or inherited factor that increases their chance of developing rheumatoid arthritis."

I count many physicians as my personal friends.  They are a dedicated group and you would think medical science would give them a bit more to work with than various versions of "We don't know."

Then I randomly looked up 3 other diseases and this is what I found...

    • "There is no known cure or way to prevent Parkinson's disease."
    • "The cause of Ulcerative Colitis is unknown."
    • "Doctors still don't understand what causes Multiple Sclerosis."

What puzzled me was that nowhere in my search was there any mention of such common sense causes as poor nutrition, lifestyle choices and unresolved negative emotions.  They're not even given honorable mention.

    How strange!

It is well known, for example, that our shifting emotions change the chemistry in our bodies (often dramatically) and thus affect our immune systems.  Along these lines, here is a quote from the health section of womensmedia.com...

Scientific evidence has shown that by compromising immune function emotions can:

    • speed the metastasis of cancer

    • increase vulnerability to viral infections, including common colds and flu

    • exacerbate plaque formation in arteries, leading to atherosclerosis, blood clotting and heart attack

    • accelerate the onset and course of diabetes

    • worsen or trigger an asthma attack

    • lead to ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract

    • damage memory

Think about it!  Our thoughts and emotions are constantly showing up in our physical bodies.  Doesn't your heart start pounding or your blood pressure rise as a result of anger, fear or trauma?  Doesn't your face flush when you are embarrassed?  Doesn't your body change under sexual arousal?

Indeed, our emotions are persistently impacting our bodies.  This goes on around the clock and I have yet to meet a physician or, for that matter, an everyday citizen who doesn't recognize this.

It should be no stretch, then, to include long held trauma, anger and fear as leading causes of disease.  Anyone who has been collapsing emotional issues with EFT has surely seen glowing evidence of this.  Have you not watched headaches, pain, numbness and countless other symptoms disappear as you use EFT to help resolve unhealthy emotions?

This emotional link to disease is clearly illustrated by Caroline Higgins, a Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferer who worked with me on stage over a year ago.  I used only EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and aimed it at her anger issues.  That's all.  No medications or other methods were used.

In one session all of her symptoms improved substantially (it's on film).  There were many open minded physicians in the audience that found this result impressive, even though they had no way to explain it in medical terms.

Caroline continued to work with Pavla Mraz, a dedicated EFT practitioner, and resolved her emotional issues still further.  Here is a note she wrote me months later...

"The seminar opened up my eyes to the possibility of not only moving past rheumatoid arthritis but cleaning the events that tend to "stick" causing unforeseen issues later!  It was there I met Pavla Mraz.  What an angel!  She took me on as a client and we spend many many hours cleaning out the "problemos" as we like to call them.

These days, when I wake up, my feet don't ache, my hands can make sandwiches, comb hair and work on the computer all day without the severe pain that once was there.  I used to automatically hand over jars to someone else who could open them, but these days I find I can do it myself!  I go to the gym very regularly and continue to gain strength!  Aside from a few crooked fingers, no one would ever guess I had a problem.  It's amazing.  The rheumatologist said that this is the best condition he's ever seen me in."

Caroline is not alone in using EFT to address physical diseases.  Our website at www.emofree.com is loaded with examples.  Further, our upcoming DVDs (available August of 2006) show 20+ people with impressive results for such diseases as Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Parkinson's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, PTSD, Hepatitis C, Asthma and more.
